Jason Martin
In the Hunt!
Off Road Speedway, Norfolk, NE – 6/20/2017
Jason Martin and the BM Motorsports team once again proved they are contenders every night they hit the race track. On Saturday Night, June 17th, the Nebraska 360 Sprint Series traveled north of Lincoln to Norfolk, Nebraska’s Off Road Speedway for the first stop for the weekend. Jason said of the track, “That place is one of the coolest places we’ve raced at this year.” “It’s not too often now days that you can get a race track that has a top and a bottom to race on.” Martin started in the 6th position in the heat race and worked his way up to 3rd, which put him in the redraw for the feature. The number 5 pill was the selected starting spot for the feature. Speaking of the redraw topic, Martin explained, “The redraw deal is simply luck and unfortunately you can be the high point guy or the last car in the redraw and get to start on the front row by mere luck of the draw.” “We’ve been on both sides of the spectrum. It’s part of racing and something we can’t control. All I can do is make sure my cars are prepared and I am up for the challenge to have to pass cars and move forward. I felt like we’ve done a good job of that.” While starting in the 5th position, Jason went to work on getting towards the top spot. “It was a fun race, there was a lot of sliding each other and lap cars really became a key role in the outcome of the race,” Martin stated. “I think at one point we were up to 3rd in one corner and 6th the next, then we’d get a run around the bottom and pass three cars back.” Martin would clear fellow EMI competitors Jordan Boston and Ryan Roberts for 2nd with about 12 laps to go. Jack Dover had stretched out a comfortable straight away lead at that point, but was encountering heavy lap traffic. It took just 3 laps for the #36 car to close in. Unfortunately, a late race caution with 8 laps to go, would put lap cars in between Dover and Martin and give the leader a clear track for a few laps. “I really felt like we had one chance to get by Jack (Dover) there towards the end and I was running just hard enough to stay within a couple car lengths, hoping that we’d get to a lap car or two right at the end,” Martin stated. “Well that happened, but somewhat unexpectedly. I saw there was a lap car getting closer, but going down the front stretch Jack swerved left and I realized then that the lap car was trying to exit the track. I was just close enough that my first reaction was to go ahead and try and slide him at the same time. I was able to slide in front of him cleanly, but I slid too hard and blew through the cushion right at the exit of the corner and that allowed him to get away from us just enough.” Not how the playbook was written in Martin’s head, he says. ”I’d definitely planned to attack Jack a little differently there at the end, Jack’s one of the best in the country and you can’t give him the chance to come back at ya like that,” Martin stated. “At the end of the day, being in contention for the win says a lot for this race team!” Crossing the checkers in the second position continues the team successful debut season with their 10th top 5 finish in just 15 attempts.
81 Speedway, Park City, KS
On Sunday, the team headed south for an NCRA show at the world famous 81 Speedway near Wichita, Kansas. “We could have ran a little closer to home, but our main sponsor and car owner, DJ Bybee has a ton of friends, family, and customers in the Wichita area, so we needed to get down there and race in front of all those people” said Martin. “It ended up being great that we had the opportunity to run up front and thank all the fans for coming out and mention Bybee Electric to all the people there in attendance! Hopefully, they’ll call with any of their electric needs!” Running up front is something the team strives for and they’ve been working hard on their program to help maintain those types of results. Jason and the BM Motorsports team have their Briley Racing Engines and Schnee Chassis by EMI working really well at the moment, again charging from a few rows back in the A feature on Sunday to another 2nd place finish. Martin says, “I wish I could tell ya some exciting story about how we were trading sliders with guys, but I can’t.” “I think we did slide Don Droud Jr. there about half way through the feature when he got caught up behind a lap car, but other than that it was pretty much rip around the top in the rubber and run it as hard as you could. 25 non-stop green flag laps with only 11 cars running in the feature makes it hard for a guy to pass 4 of 5 cars and run down the leader, but again we know we’re pretty good right now and we’ll just have to keep up the hard work and we’ll knock off a few more wins.” That opportunity will come sooner than you know it. The team plans to try and get 3 nights of racing in this week. US-30 Speedway is the plan for Thursday evening with the Racesaver 305 division, then they plan to head down to Heartland Park in Topeka for a little bit of regional ASCS action. Saturday is a little up in the air currently, but they’re planning to go over to the “Sprint Car Capitol of the World” at Knoxville, Iowa, to get some quality laps leading up to the next few months of races they’ll be attending there.
